Guitarist Kenny Burrell debuted on Blue Note in 1956 and throughout the following seven years made a series of excellent albums that culminated with his masterwork, Midnight Blue. Recorded in 1963, the album waded deep into the blues, conjuring an alluring late-night vibe with a soulful cast including Stanley Turrentine on tenor sax, Major Holley, Jr. on bass, Bill English on drums, and Ray Barretto on congas. Alfred Lion considered this his favorite production and well he should have. Without piano, Burrell, Stanley Turrentine and company get a clean open sound and a deep groove on such now classic compositions as the title tune and "Chitlins Con Carne," which has become a blues band staple.

With Byrd, Jackie McLean, Sam Jones and Art Taylor, he explores six of his finest compositions. Davis possessed the ability to write music that was funky and catchy, but still progressive, which explains why he was one of Art Blakey's favorite pianists and composers. While Joe Henderson seemed to arrive fully formed on his auspicious 1963 debut Page One, the album was really a showcase for the transcendent collaboration between the tenor saxophonist and trumpeter Kenny Dorham who would form a potent frontline team on numerous classics. The album opens with a pair of indelible Dorham compositions ("Blue Bossa" and "La Mesha"), the six-song set penned by Henderson includes "Recorda-Me." One of the best and most influencal (jazz) albums ever.
